“Project Hail Mary” reminds us what it takes to save our planet through the eyes of a lone astronaut in space.

In 2021, Andy Weir released the sci-fi novel, Project Hail Mary. This book came ten years after his popular novel The Martian and its subsequent film adaptation. The novel follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher, who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. While exploring his identity, he finds out that a tiny organism, Astrophage, has been stealing energy from the sun. He realizes that he is on a mission to discover how to combat Astrophage, and he is humanity’s only hope to save life on Earth.

I love this novel because it makes scientific discovery fascinating and exciting. Much of the plot centers around Grace developing experiments and using his scientific knowledge to uncover the mysteries around him. He develops hypotheses, interprets results, and works through failures throughout the story, to ultimately solve the Astrophage crisis.

The book also addresses the deeper cultural problem of climate change. The story is fictional, but the Astrophage crisis hints at what the Earth could look like if we don’t take the time to take better care of our planet. As Grace regains his memory, he begins to remember that combatting Astrophage required unprecedented international cooperation. Scientists, governments, and communities worked together and shared all their resources and knowledge to face a common enemy. Weir uses science fiction to show us that climate change is a real problem. We need global cooperation to protect our planet’s health before it is too late.

Project Hail Mary is more than just a novel; it is a reminder of our responsibility to confront climate change. It is a compelling read that shows us what our planet might end up like if we neglect the warnings in front of us. The book is available for purchase here and a movie based on the book is releasing in March 2026.
